 2010 Bridge Challenge

                                                                            HONG KONG                            CHESTER, USA                              SYDNEY

There are many famous bridges around the world. Your task is to visit some of them, complete information regarding each bridge and then move onto the next. You will need to earn frequent flyer points to enable you to reach each bridge. These frequent flyer points will be awarded each time you read a book. The number of points awarded will be determined by the level of book you read. You are encouraged to read books at your reading and interest level and to also try some that may be slightly challenging or outside your normal genre.

As well as the standard frequent flyer points -

  • Choosing a new author you have not read before will earn you extra points.
  • Completing a whole series of books will earn you bonus points.
  • Reading the Younger Reader Short Listed titles will earn you double points.
  • To earn 500 bonus points before you start, what milestone did the Story Bridge celebrate on July 6th?

The Process:

1. Glue your map of the world into your Information Literacy books. Mark your starting point, the Story Bridge in Queensland and your finish point, the Sydney Harbour Bridge in New South Wales.

2. Make a list of the books you would like to read this term. These can be Fiction, Series, SF Quarto or Non-Fiction and can be from school, town or your home libraries.

3. You must make sure that you include a variety of different bridge types in your travels. You need to have at least 5 different types of bridges in your research and you must visit each of the continents at least once.

There is a list of bridges and continents here.

This list contains examples only and is not exhaustive. You may research other bridges of your own choosing if you prefer.

4. To begin, complete the information for the Story Bridge in Queensland by using the Excel worksheet linked here.

5. The following websites will help you find information about the various bridge types and their location in the world. The World Book Encyclopedia and atlases in the Reference Section will also have lots of information about many of the bridges you need to research.

Famous Bridges                World Bridges                   Bridges                    List of Bridges

6. Keep reading to earn your frequent flyer points. Refer to the document here to help you work out how many frequent flyer points you will need to travel between countries and the bridges you need to visit.

7. All the books that you finish reading must be sighted by Mrs Gardiner. She may also ask you some questions about the book.

8. Once home you will receive a Certificate of completion. Email Mrs Gardiner when you have completed your journey.
